This therapy can be very rewarding for the client and the therapist as it moves people quickly forward in understanding their issues, except where abuse of any kind is the focus of the work, were pace and control has to be at the forefront of the client’s control. But even in these cases the trust between the client and the therapist builds quickly which enables the therapeutic bond to be more secure quicker and be more consistent. The therapist is rewarded by fulfilling the client’s needs quicker and also by integrating in the client’s emotional and physical world, it tends to give value and support to both parties and you feel to have connected on a human level by letting the client reach out and touch someone on an emotional level.

All therapists have felt this in their work, some will have used it and some will have withdrawn from that connection dependant on there comfort zone or theoretical stance. Sometimes you will have called it transference but I will explore this further by covering the types of feelings and emotions you may encounter. I can only describe this from my perspective as I feel it my way, which will be a unique and individual view of my world as I see it, based on my experience both emotionally, psychically and mentally. You will experience these feelings differently to me, which is why it is possibly more beneficial to come to a training course with other people so you can familiarise yourself with how your individual reaction works, in a safe and controlled environment. Then you can feedback on your reactions to cement your understanding of them. The downside of utilising this way of working is that in order for you to connect at this level you also have to reach out to the client making you vulnerable as well as the client, this is a very levelling experience which is why it reduces the boundaries between you and the client and builds up the much needed therapeutic bond for trust to be given. In this vulnerable world it is ok to fear their pain and is indeed the reason why we do this work, for by understanding their fear you also understand their pain and in doing so we connect as human beings, not as expert just a partnership of exploration. I believe the client knows their world better than anyone it’s just that they cannot make sense of it. We as therapists just facilitate an open and trusting space for them to explore it so they can come to understand why they do what they do and then become able to make an informed choice to do it differently.
